Throughout history we see nations rise and nations fall. Have you ever wondered why a thriving nation falls? The Bible answers that question in Proverbs 14:34 where it says “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” The Roman Empire rose to be the most powerful civilization of its time. However, the government became corrupt, the people followed along and society declined. The Roman Empire fell and now it is a small nation among the world of nations.
Solomon began to serve and follow idols and turned away from the true and living God.
Under King David, Israel became a mighty and respected nation. Why? Because King David was a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14). King David sought to lead the nation of Israel according to the will of God by seeking God’s leadership and worshipping Him faithfully. As a result, Israel grew in size, grew in power and flourished as a nation. However, when King David’s son, Solomon, became King; he began to serve and follow idols and turned away from the true and living God (1 Kings 11:4). King Solomon turned the nation of Israel from the righteousness of God toward the sinful worship of idols.
Therefore, when King Solomon’s son, Rehoboam, became King, the nation of Israel fell for the sins of King Solomon. When a nation turns from God, that nation falls.
